Can previous scholarship recipients reapply?
Yes, past year's scholarship recipients can apply as long as they have not yet received a total of $7000 in MYLA scholarships over a 4 year period since 2005-2006 school year.

When is the deadline for the application?
The deadline for the 2008-2009 MYLA Regular Scholarships is June 13th, 2008 and for MYLA Journalism and Political Activism Scholarships is June 30th, 2008. Your completed application must be postmarked on or before this date. Applications received after this date will not be reviewed.

Who can apply for the scholarship?
Anyone entering/attending a post-high school accredited higher education institution in Minnesota and who have not yet received a total of $7000 in MYLA scholarship since the 2005-2006 school year can apply. Applicant must have already graduated from high school or will be graduating in Spring 2008. That includes: undergraduates, graduate students, PhD students, Medical Students, etc. Please review the application form for more details on eligibility criteria.

Do all application materials have to be sent together?
Please attempt to include all application materials in one mailing (Letters of Recommendation can be sent by the applicant, as long as the envelope is sealed and signed by the recommender). At times this might be difficult to accomplish. In such a case, please make a note on the application checklist that remaining application materials will be sent separately. Please note that all required application materials must be postmarked by the June 13th, 2008 deadline for regular scholarships OR June 30th, 2008 deadline for Journalism and Political Activism scholarship.

In addition, please make sure that you:
a) Do not staple your application (instead use paper clips)
b) Do not fold your application
c) Do not print any part of your application double sided

Can I have more than two (2) Letters of Recommendation sent?
Please only have two (2) Letters of Recommendation sent to MYLA. If more than 2 letters of recommendation are received by MYLA, only two letters will be randomly chosen. Please also NOTE that if two letters of recommendation are not received by MYLA, then it will disqualify your application. Letters of Recommendation must use the Letter of Recommendation Form found on our website. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that his/her send the letters of recommendation by the application deadline date.

Do I need to send my high school transcript or if I am in graduate school my undergraduate transcript?
Those students entering their freshman year and those entering their sophomore years in college are required to send an official high school transcript as well as an official college transcript.

Those students currently enrolled in their graduate degree program are required to send an official undergraduate transcript as well as an official graduate program transcript.

I have sent an Email but I have not received a response?
If it has been 3 days since you sent MYLA an email and have not received a response, it is likely that either we did not get your email or your ISP filtered out our email response. You can use the web based form on the MYLA website to resend your question. Also, please make sure that your ISP provider is not filtering out MYLA emails. You may also want to include MYLA email address in your address book and/or your list of email addresses that should not be filtered out by your ISP.

Will MYLA award separate scholarship for Political Activism and Journalism?
NO, there is ONLY ONE scholarship available, which will be awarded to EITHER a Political Activism OR Journalism scholarship applicant, provided all eligibility criteria are met.

Can I apply for both MYLA regular Scholarship and Journalism/Political Activism scholarship?
Yes, you can apply for both MYLA regular scholarship and MYLA Journalism/Political Activism scholarship. However, a person can only receive ONE scholarship. In a case where an applicant becomes eligible for both scholarships, MYLA will award them the scholarship with the higher amount.
