2005 - 2006 award recipients

September 13, 2005 - 2005-2006 Winners Announced

A special congratulations to the winners of the 2005-2006 Academic year. The recipients are listed below. We would also like to thank those that applied. We hope you will apply again in the future. We wish this year's scholarship recipient and all the youth in the community success in their future endeavors, Insha Allah.

Grand Prize ($5,000):

Sumaiya Mamdani
University of Minnesota - College of Liberal Arts

  • Major: Child Psychology
  • IRG Speaker
  • Al-Amal School Volunteer (Science Fair Judge, Tutor, MC at Graduation)
  • Vice President al-Madinah Cultural Center 2005
  • Advisor MYM and a member of the al-Amal School PR Committee
  • Student Experience Intership, Volunteer Therapist for a child with
    Cerebral Palsy

2nd Place ($2,000):

Liala Helal
University of Minnesota - Journalism and Mass Communications

  • Major: Journalism & Mass Communication and English
  • Minor: Management
  • Journalism Research Assistant and a Reporter with the Minnesota Daily (Campus Newspaper)
  • Arabic Teacher at the ICM Saturday School
  • Excellence in Leadership Award at the U of MN Student Activities Office

3rd Place ($2,000):

Abdul Basit
University of Minnesota - Institute of Technology

  • University of MN (M.S.E.E)
  • Event Coordinator and now a President of Al-Madinah Cultural Center
  • Advisor and President of Small World Discussion panel and Coffee Hour

4th Place ($2,000):

Harris Khan
University of Minnesota - Institute of Technology

  • Major: Biomedical Engineering
  • 9 week Summer Volunteer work in Costa Rica
  • Table Leader and Youth Leadership Award for Interfaith Youth Forum started by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for selected teenage Muslims, jews and Chistians.
  • Volunteer at the University Scholars Community Service Events (Shelter work, Nursing home operations, etc.)

5th Place ($2,000):

Khaled El-Sawaf
University of Minnesota - College of Liberal Arts

  • University of Minnesota undergraduate student in College of Liberal Arts, pursuing a degree in political science
  • Plans on going to law school in the future and using his law career to serve the community both with his legal skills and with involvement in politics
  • Treasurer of MSA
  • Member of U of M Parliamentary Traveling Debate Team, competed in National Tournaments.

6th Place ($2,000):

Nasra Giama
University of Minnesota - School of Nursing

  • Program Assistant for the School Age Child Care at the Rochester School District#535
  • Organized and opened a Tutoring Center for Minority Students
  • MSA And Somali Sports & Youth Organization
  • Represented RCTC MSA at the Rochester International Organization (Rochester WOrld Festival)
